Should Repentant Boko Haram Members Be Used in Counter-Insurgency Efforts?
Reintegrating repentant Boko Haram members into security efforts or the Civilian Joint Task Force is controversial, but supporters argue that it can offer operational advantages. Former fighters may understand local terrain, supply routes, recruitment networks and the group’s methods. However, any reintegration process must be carefully screened and supervised. Security agencies must verify repentance, investigate past crimes, protect affected communities and ensure that victims are not ignored. The fight against insurgency requires local intelligence, trained security personnel and accountability. Using former insurgents without strong safeguards could create new risks, even where the goal is to improve peace and security in the North-East.
