Kidal Falls: Russian Africa Corps Withdraws After Separatist Assault
After a weekend of coordinated attacks by separatist and jihadist fighters, Russian Africa Corps and Malian troops pulled out of Kidal in northern Mali. The Azawad Liberation Front claimed permanent control of the city, declaring it free. Explosions and gunfire also hit Bamako, Sevare, Mopti and Gao. Malian defence minister Sadio Camara was killed in a suicide truck bombing near the capital. The Alliance of Sahel States called the assaults a monstrous plot against regional liberation. Russia said its forces will keep operating elsewhere in Mali. Most of its Africa Corps fighters are former Wagner mercenaries overseen by Moscow’s defence ministry.
