Reclaiming Our Heritage: Renaming Colonial Cities and Rethinking the Flag
Many Nigerian cities still bear colonial-era names that no longer reflect our identity. Lagos, originally called Eko, and the Niger River and state all remind us of past foreign rule. We should consider restoring indigenous names that celebrate our history and culture. In addition to place names, our national flag can also be refreshed. It was designed by a Nigerian, but a modern update could better represent our diversity and unity. I’ve sketched a new flag concept and would love to hear your thoughts. Let’s spark a national conversation on these ideas. How else can we shed colonial legacies and strengthen our sense of nationhood?
