Nigeria Enrolls Over 136 Million Citizens into New Digital ID System
Nigeria’s National Identity Management Commission has now enrolled more than 136 million citizens and legal residents into its national identity database. This milestone follows a stakeholder engagement with the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning on the implementation of the updated NIMC Act. The new law makes the National Identification Number the core of the country’s “one person, one identity” framework. Under the Act, NIMC will serve as the root certifying authority for digital credentials, cybersecurity, and data protection. The commission aims to complete enrolment and issue IDs to all eligible residents as quickly as possible. As part of the rollout, NIMC will run compulsory online data protection training for enrollment agents during July 2026 to ensure compliance and enhance service delivery.
