Nigerian Army Graduates 14,000 New Soldiers to Strengthen Counter-Terrorism Campaign
The Nigerian Army has trained 14,000 of the 28,000 additional soldiers approved by President Bola Tinubu to bolster operations against terrorism, banditry and violent crime. Lieutenant-General Waidi Shaibu, the Chief of Army Staff, revealed the update during an interactive session with media executives at the 2026 Army Day Celebration in Port Harcourt. He said a recent review of manpower gaps led to the presidential approval for 28,000 new recruits. To date, 6,000 soldiers have graduated from the Zaria training depot, 5,000 from the Osogbo school, and 3,000 are set to finish at the Amasiri-Edda depot. The redesigned 11-month curriculum now focuses on marksmanship, counter-insurgency tactics and critical field skills before deployment. Alongside fresh manpower, the military has deployed mine-resistant vehicles, advanced surveillance platforms and unmanned aerial vehicles. These enhancements have supported intelligence-led operations that neutralised or arrested 1,877 terrorists to date.
