Behind the Scenes of the First Full-Length Chinua Achebe Biography
Literary scholar Terri Ochiagha is writing the first full-length biography of Chinua Achebe for Princeton University Press. Generously funded by the British Academy and supported by extensive archive research across Nigeria, the UK and the US, her work goes beyond dates to explore Achebe’s style, editorial legacy and personal journey. As part of a British Academy public engagement campaign, she visited Government College Umuahia and Peter University in Awka, spoke to students about Achebe’s formative years, ran an essay competition and plans to mentor outstanding young writers virtually. Her goal is to bring rigorous biographical practice to Nigerian audiences and foster future collaborations on heritage and education. Drawing on untapped archives, field immersion and interviews, Ochiagha examines the cultural crossroads that shaped Achebe’s life—from his high-school dormitory window to his Biafran wartime poetry. The biography, titled “Chinua Achebe: A Life at the Crossroads,” is slated for publication in 2029, offering readers an intimate, evidence-based portrait of Africa’s most celebrated novelist.
