State Police Is A Start, But Nigeria Needs Full Security Decentralization
State police is a positive reform, but it won’t solve Nigeria’s security crisis on its own. We need full decentralization that empowers local governments and the private sector to partner in protection. Some governors are compromised and may perform as poorly as the federal force. Communities that can afford private security already pay high fees. Registered vigilante groups in farming areas face ransom demands of millions. Allowing these groups to bear proper arms under police oversight could strengthen local defence. To secure peace, Nigerians must also prepare for conflict. State police is progress, but it’s just one step—especially in the north where risks are greatest.
