ADC Leadership Row Driven by Legal Procedures, Not Outside Influence

ADC Leadership Row Driven by Legal Procedures, Not Outside Influence — 1 of 3
1 / 3

Two Nigerian lawyers, Inibehe Effiong and Bodunde Opeyemi, explain that the ongoing leadership crisis in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is rooted in court processes rather than external meddling. Mr Effiong, a public interest lawyer, says the faction led by former Senate President David Mark took an “unusual” interlocutory appeal instead of opposing the case at the trial court. He argues this step could complicate the dispute further. Mr Opeyemi traces the issue to a July 2025 party meeting that produced a new executive. He notes the Court of Appeal’s order to maintain the status quo ante bellum requires the electoral commission to recognize no faction until the final judgment. Both lawyers agree the electoral body is bound by that court order. They believe the impasse will persist until the Federal High Court delivers its substantive ruling.

True, settling leadership disputes through courts can boost ADC's credibility, though it might slow decision-making and risk legal delays.

I'm not convinced court decisions alone will guarantee fair outcomes; party unity and voter engagement still play big roles in future contests.

I'm not fully convinced the courts alone fuelled this rift; intra-party power plays often hide behind legal jargon for advantage.

The ADC should document every court decision publicly and engage members at ward level to clarify how legal steps impact their leadership choices.
