Messi Makes History as Oldest Player to Score World Cup Hat-trick in Argentina’s 3-0 Win
Lionel Messi scored his first-ever World Cup hat-trick as Argentina thrashed Algeria 3-0 in Kansas City. At 38 years and 357 days old, he became the oldest player to achieve a World Cup treble, surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2018 record. Messi opened the scoring with a long-range strike in the 17th minute. He added a second goal by poking in a rebound in the 60th minute and completed his historic treble with a left-footed drive from the edge of the box in the 76th minute. His third goal also took Messi level with Miroslav Klose on 16 World Cup goals overall. This feat came exactly 20 years after he made his World Cup debut and scored against Serbia and Montenegro. Argentina now prepare to face Austria in Arlington and Jordan later this month. Algeria will take on Jordan in Santa Clara before their final group match against Austria back in Kansas City.
