Tottenham Smash Club Record with £85m Mateus Fernandes Deal

Tottenham Smash Club Record with £85m Mateus Fernandes Deal

Tottenham Hotspur have secured the club’s record signing with a reported £85 million move for 21-year-old midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United. The fee eclipses the previous high of £65 million paid for Dominic Solanke in August 2024. Fernandes said he was “very excited” to join a “massive club” and praised the head coach’s vision. “We look at football in the same way – with fight and energy to win every game. I can’t wait to get started and meet the fans,” he added. Spurs, who finished 17th in the Premier League last season, have already brought in Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Jan Paul van Hecke and Martin Dúbravka as they overhaul their squad. Another blockbuster move may follow, with Sandro Tonali reportedly set to arrive for up to £100 million from Newcastle United.

How do you think Fernandes will handle the pressure of becoming Spurs' record signing at just 21 years old?

True talk. It's a massive step but he seems mentally strong enough to soak up the pressure.

Spurs are paying 85 million pounds for a 21-year-old, smashing their previous high. That kind of leap in spending feels risky.

With that hefty fee, how exactly do Spurs plan to balance this payment with their other transfer priorities?

Big fees don't guarantee success, especially when past heavy investments have failed to deliver the expected impact on the pitch.

Tottenham should integrate Fernandes gradually, pairing him with veteran midfielders and easing expectations until he adapts to Premier League demands.
