Senate Approves Flexibility for INEC to Avoid Ramadan Clash in 2027 Elections
The Senate has amended Clause 28 of the Electoral Act to shorten the election notice period from 360 days to 300 days. This gives INEC the legal buffer it needs to shift the 2027 polling dates. Lawmakers moved the change after stakeholders raised concerns that the original February and March schedule would clash with Ramadan. The motion was led by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and seconded by Senator Simon Lalong. Members also debated Clause 60(3) on result transmission. By 55 votes to 15, they upheld a dual electronic and manual transmission model over a real-time electronic-only system. With these changes, INEC can adjust dates to respect religious observances and ensure a more inclusive electoral process.
