FIFA Clears Wrexham’s Arthur Okonkwo to Join Super Eagles

FIFA Clears Wrexham’s Arthur Okonkwo to Join Super Eagles

Arthur Okonkwo has received FIFA approval to switch his international allegiance from England to Nigeria, according to a sports news outlet. The 24-year-old, born in London to Nigerian parents, previously featured for England’s youth teams and is now eligible for Nigeria’s senior side. Okonkwo could earn his first cap when the Super Eagles defend their Unity Cup crown in May. Iran and Jamaica are already confirmed for the invitational tournament, and coach Éric Chelle is expected to test several new faces. Nigeria also has friendlies against Poland and Portugal in June. Okonkwo began his career at Arsenal before loan spells at Crewe Alexandra and Sturm Graz. He joined Wrexham permanently in 2024 and has quickly become one of the English Championship’s top goalkeepers.

He's yet to make a senior appearance for England, so this change feels more strategic than purely patriotic.

Switching allegiances doesn't guarantee a starting spot; homegrown goalies might still get the nod ahead of him.

Coaches should integrate Okonkwo gradually, balancing his youth experience in England with local training routines.
