How a Fake iPhone Dealer Scammed Me of ₦8.7M in One Day

Chinedu runs a small electronics shop in Alaba. He received a WhatsApp offer for UK-used iPhone 13 and 14 in bulk at seemingly fair prices. The seller shared IMEI samples, videos of cartons being opened, and glowing testimonials. They built trust over several days. The seller proposed starting small but then agreed to supply 50 units. Convinced by a dispatch video, Chinedu transferred ₦8.7 million and awaited the shipment. When tracking never updated, calls went unanswered and the seller vanished. The money was split and moved within minutes. Chinedu lost his capital, borrowed to stay afloat and now warns others to use escrow services or platforms with payment protection.

Did Chinedu confirm any official seller credentials or verify the dealer's contact before transferring such a large sum?

Did he ask for proof of ownership or any documentation showing the seller truly had that iPhone before sending ₦8.7M?

It's alarming how easily scammers leverage IMEI samples and glowing testimonials to appear legitimate within days.

I'm not convinced bulk discounts alone should override basic due diligence, even with videos and references provided.

Always verify seller identity independently, inspect devices in person, and confirm IMEIs with official carrier databases before any large payment.
