ADC Faction Vows to ‘Fight FG’ and Restore Democracy Amid Convention Crisis

ADC Faction Vows to ‘Fight FG’ and Restore Democracy Amid Convention Crisis — 1 of 3
1 / 3

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) faction loyal to David Mark held its national convention despite an internal leadership dispute and questions over INEC recognition. National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola defended the process, saying the former National Working Committee was lawfully dissolved and a caretaker leadership duly registered with the electoral commission. ADC leaders criticised INEC for failing to monitor the event and alleged bias aimed at weakening opposition. They warned that attempts to undermine the party were part of a shrinking democratic space and vowed to resist any moves that threaten electoral fairness. Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, speaking at the convention, painted a grim picture of Nigeria’s security and economic outlook. He warned that rising national debt, worsening terrorism rankings and growing insecurity risked pushing the country toward disaster without urgent leadership sacrifices.

True, it does raise questions. Maybe they aimed to project unity and stake a formal claim before rivals could.

It's strange that they claimed full legitimacy even as INEC recognition remains unclear and rival factions dispute their authority.

I'm not convinced that holding a parallel convention solves anything when internal unity and legal backing are still in question.

The faction could focus on mediation with INEC and rival leaders first, then rebuild trust before claiming to restore democracy nationwide.
