Tyla Wins Second SAMA International Achievement Award, Calls for a Unified Africa

Grammy-winning South African singer Tyla received the AfriPure International Achievement Award at the 32nd South African Music Awards in Sun City. It is her second win in the category after her 2024 victory, placing her alongside Black Coffee as the only artists to win it twice. Accepting the award in person for the first time, Tyla spoke about navigating her rapid global rise without a clear blueprint. She thanked South Africa, Pretoria and the Bacardi dance movement, which she said helped transform the success of her hit song, “Water.” She invited fellow artists, including Makhadzi, Cassper Nyovest and Zee Nxumalo, to join her on stage. Tyla ended her speech by calling for a more unified Africa and celebrating artists across the continent.

Awards are meaningful, but unity needs more than speeches and trophies; the industry still has to make cross-border work easier.

Artists, radio stations, and promoters can support that idea by giving more room to collaborations and talent from across the continent.
