Racism Row Erupts as Ex-Spain PM Slams France Squad Ahead of World Cup Clash

Racism Row Erupts as Ex-Spain PM Slams France Squad Ahead of World Cup Clash

Spain’s former prime minister sparked outrage after claiming France’s national team “does not have any French players” in a World Cup semi-final preview. French leaders from the interior minister to the Socialist Party head condemned his remarks as racist and out of touch with France’s commitment to diversity. The French Football Federation has also been urged to seek legal action. Even within Spain, the comment drew fire, with the transport minister labelling the former PM a “post-Francoist idiot.” France’s embassy in Madrid quickly rebutted the claim, noting nearly all squad members were born in France. The incident adds to a spate of racist attacks surrounding the tournament, including a recent parliamentary condemnation of a senator’s slur against France captain Kylian Mbappé.
