COAS Warns Lake Chad, Sahel and Gulf of Guinea Instability Fuels Nigeria’s Insecurity
In a lecture at this year’s Nigerian Army Day Celebration in Port Harcourt, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen Olufemi Oluyede, said growing unrest in neighbouring regions is driving Nigeria’s security challenges. He pointed to instability in the Lake Chad Basin, the Sahel and the Gulf of Guinea combined with small arms proliferation, porous borders and divisions along ethnic and religious lines as key factors worsening insurgency, banditry, terrorism, cybercrime and transnational organised crime. To counter these threats, the Army has strengthened collaboration with other security agencies, improved intelligence gathering and deepened community engagement. Investments in modern technologies, capacity building and both kinetic and non-kinetic tactics aim to disrupt criminal networks and restore peace. He added that recent reforms prioritise civilian protection and respect for human rights through human rights desks, clear rules of engagement and enhanced civil-military relations programmes. Expanded training in counter-insurgency, urban warfare and cyber defence underpins the Army’s drive for innovation and regional cooperation.
