Congress Demands Answers on US Airstrikes in Nigeria’s Sokoto State

Congress Demands Answers on US Airstrikes in Nigeria’s Sokoto State

Lawmakers in the US House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa have formally asked the Pentagon to explain the December 25, 2025 airstrikes in Sokoto State and outline America’s wider military presence in Nigeria. In a March 9, 2026 letter, they pressed for details on the legal authority for the operation, coordination with Nigerian authorities, intelligence sharing, and allegations of missile failures and civilian harm in Tambuwal, Ofa, Jabo and surrounding areas. The inquiry also seeks a financial breakdown of the strikes, clarification on the reported deployment of around 200 troops for training, and the Pentagon’s assessment of future operations. A response is requested by March 20, 2026.

It's striking how little detail the letter provides about civilian impact or legal basis for those December strikes in Sokoto.

I doubt Congress will get a full account if the Pentagon claims operational secrecy is at stake here.

Civil society groups and local media should document any eyewitness accounts and demand parliamentary oversight on foreign military actions.
