Medical Academics Threaten Nationwide Strike, Give FG 21-Day Ultimatum on Pay and Welfare
The Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA) has served the Federal Government a 21-day ultimatum to resolve outstanding pay and welfare concerns before embarking on a nationwide indefinite strike. NAMDA President Dr. Nosa Orhue said negotiations over the 2009 agreement have stalled since April despite over 24 months of dialogue. He decried salary disparities between university-based medical lecturers and hospital consultants performing identical duties, and noted that his members remain excluded from recent welfare improvements. The association demands implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS), special pension benefits for retired hospital-based academics, and payment of earned academic and professorial allowances. It warned that failure to conclude talks within three weeks will prompt NEC to reconvene and trigger industrial action. NAMDA also commended recent initiatives by the Tinubu administration, including measures to strengthen university education and enhance public health preparedness against possible outbreaks.
