ActionAid Nigeria Condemns Alleged Assaults at Ozoro Cultural Festival

ActionAid Nigeria has condemned alleged violence against women and girls at a recent cultural festival in Ozoro, Delta State. Video clips circulating online show women being harassed, chased and assaulted in public. Country Director Dr Andrew Mamedu described the incidents as “disturbing” and “a grave failure to guarantee safety and dignity.” He warned that attempts to excuse the abuse as cultural practice must not be tolerated. The organisation urged the Delta State government to ensure swift arrests and transparent prosecutions. It also called for survivor-centred support, including medical care, legal assistance and psychosocial services. Mamedu emphasised that ending gender-based violence requires sustained action across communities, institutions and leadership structures.
