Abuja’s Vulnerable Beggars Exploited as Drug Couriers, FCTA Warns
The Federal Capital Territory Administration has raised alarm over criminal gangs using street beggars and destitute persons to transport illicit drugs across Abuja. Security intelligence gathered during Operation Sweep revealed that these vulnerable individuals—including persons with disabilities—are targeted at night to evade detection by operatives. Officials noted that some couriers even resisted enforcement teams using their mobility aids. During Monday’s raid, enforcement officers evacuated 54 people (45 adults and nine children), bringing the total removed in three months to 889. Those taken off the streets are now in government rehabilitation centres for profiling, welfare support and vocational training. The exercise continues in key areas such as Maitama, Asokoro, Garki, Wuse and Gwarinpa under directives from the FCT Minister.
