After a goalless first half, Thembi Kgatlana gave South Africa the lead in the 56th minute before captain Refiloe Jane made it 2-0 in the 77th minute. Christy Ucheibe converted a stoppage-time penalty for Nigeria, but the Falcons could not find an equaliser. The defeat follows Nigeria’s WAFCON quarter-final loss to Cameroon and ends the team’s record of qualifying for every edition of the Women’s World Cup.
