Real Madrid Legend José Santamaría Passes Away at 96
Real Madrid has announced the passing of José Emilio Santamaría at the age of 96, marking the end of an era for one of football’s greatest defenders. Santamaría joined Los Blancos in 1957 from Nacional and formed part of a golden generation alongside Di Stéfano, Puskás, Gento and Kopa. He helped the club win four European Cups and six La Liga titles before retiring in 1966. Born in Uruguay, Santamaría represented his country 25 times before becoming a naturalised Spaniard. He featured for Spain at the 1962 World Cup and later served as the national team’s coach in 1982.
