South Korea Plans Second Cash Payout to 36 Million amid Rising Fuel Prices
The South Korean government will launch a second phase of cash aid for its lowest 70% of income earners, covering about 36 million people. Lawmakers approved an extra 26.2 trillion won budget to cushion the impact of higher fuel costs linked to the Middle East conflict. Under the new scheme, residents in the greater Seoul area will receive 100,000 won each, while those in regions facing population decline could get up to 250,000 won. Eligibility is based on March’s national health insurance payments. Single-person households that paid 130,000 won or less or earn under 43.4 million won annually qualify. Those with assets above 1.2 billion won or financial income over 20 million won are excluded. Applications open next Monday and close on July 3. Recipients can collect funds via credit or debit cards, prepaid cards, or local currency vouchers. The aid must be spent by August 31 at small businesses with annual sales below 3 billion won. The program aims to relieve household burdens and boost local consumption.
