Unpacking the Sign of Jonah in Luke 11:29-32

In Luke 11:29-32, Jesus challenges a crowd that constantly seeks miraculous proofs. He warns them that no sign will be given except the sign of Jonah. Jonah’s journey to Nineveh led a sinful city to repentance. Jesus explains that in the same way, His life, death, and resurrection will call this generation to turn back to God. He also contrasts the faith of the Queen of the South with the present generation. Her eagerness to learn Solomon’s wisdom condemns those who reject someone greater than Solomon. The men of Nineveh will stand in judgment against a people who ignore the call of the Son of Man. His message, like Jonah’s, demands a response that leads to genuine repentance.
