The Day Unity Left Our Family: Remembering Abiola
There are dates the heart refuses to forget. June 7 used to be my birthday celebration, full of laughter, cooking, and family reunions. But six years ago, Abiola arrived from Lagos and died that day. Since then, every June 7 brings remembrance, not joy. Abiola was more than a sister; she was the living bond that held the Olasehinde family together. She kept track of distant cousins, stepped in to unite relatives, and nurtured every branch of our family tree. Without her, many connections have faded into silence. Her passing also snapped the unity she embodied. Today, siblings live in different cities, relationships drift apart, and our festive seasons feel like separate streams instead of a single gathering. As I mark another birthday, I honor her memory and the love she wove through our family. May we find strength to rebuild what we lost and gather around the table again.
