Scholes Slams Ronaldo for Holding Portugal Back After Messi’s Hat-Trick

Scholes Slams Ronaldo for Holding Portugal Back After Messi’s Hat-Trick — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Paul Scholes has accused Cristiano Ronaldo of disrupting Portugal’s tactics by insisting on a starting role at 41. Nicky Butt also labelled him selfish and a “massive problem” in the squad. Scholes pointed to Portugal’s 1-1 draw with DR Congo and revealed he privately asked manager Roberto Martinez if Ronaldo was causing issues. He quipped that at 41, the only position he should start in is goalkeeper. The former Manchester United midfielder added that Lionel Messi’s recent hat-trick and Kylian Mbappé’s brace will only increase the pressure on Ronaldo. He also expressed sympathy for Martinez, who continues to defend his captain. Despite mounting criticism, Ronaldo is still expected to start as Portugal prepare to face Uzbekistan and Colombia in their next World Cup Group K fixtures.

Do you think Ronaldo's insistence on a starting role at 41 is hurting Portugal after that draw?

Couldn't the coach's tactics be to blame rather than Ronaldo's age or starting spot?

Scholes and Butt both highlight how a single veteran player can reshape a squad's dynamic, especially against mid-tier opposition.

I get Scholes's point, but Ronaldo's record and leadership might outweigh any tactical hiccups in that DR Congo draw.

Portugal should consider rotating veteran starters to maintain tactical balance and give fringe players more competitive minutes.
