Student Protest Over UNICROSS Crash Erupts in Violence, Calabar Hospital Vandalized
A protest by students of the University of Cross River State turned violent in Calabar after a road crash killed three students and a staff member. Demonstrators vandalized parts of the General Hospital, including an ambulance, as patients and relatives fled in panic. Security operatives later dispersed the crowd when unrest spread toward the Governor’s Office. A public affairs commentator condemned the property destruction, arguing violence has no place in protest. Another resident questioned why security agencies failed to act despite advance notice of the demonstration. A different commentator defended the right to protest but urged peaceful action, blaming poor infrastructure—especially the Calabar–Itu Road—for recurring unrest. The Cross River State police spokesperson said the situation is under control and denied that protesters were shot. He explained officers used smoke canisters and teargas after some tried to force entry into the Governor’s Office.
