Uniting to Defeat Banditry and Terrorism: Strategy Session with President Tinubu
We face rising banditry and terrorism across Nigeria, from cattle rustling and kidnappings in the Northwest and North Central to Boko Haram and ISWAP in the Northeast. Military victories alone have failed to close governance gaps that fuel new threats. A strategic meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must tackle four key pillars: 1. Security reform: Fast-track Police Act implementation, empower community policing, equip forces for rapid response and intelligence gathering. 2. Economic incentives: Create jobs, provide water and grazing routes for herders, expand irrigation for farmers, and launch a “Security + Development” fund at the local level. 3. Intelligence and technology: Deploy drone surveillance, a national biometric and cattle-tagging system, and real-time data sharing among security agencies. 4. Justice and reconciliation: Establish special courts for banditry and terrorism cases and involve traditional leaders and civil society in deradicalization and peacebuilding. By combining governance, development, technology, and justice, we can move beyond kinetic force and build lasting security.
