Nigeria Becomes US’s Second-Largest Trading Partner in Sub-Saharan Africa

Nigeria Becomes US’s Second-Largest Trading Partner in Sub-Saharan Africa

The United States Chargé d’Affaires in Nigeria announced that two-way trade with Nigeria hit nearly $15 billion in 2025. This marks a 14% rise over the previous year and places Nigeria second only to South Africa in US trade across sub-Saharan Africa. Over 100 American companies now operate in Nigeria, driving job creation and economic growth on both sides. The US Mission and Nigeria’s Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment have launched a five-year commercial partnership to boost trade and remove barriers. The initiative brings together nearly 50 US and Nigerian businesses. It focuses on agriculture, the digital economy and infrastructure. Security cooperation has also strengthened, with joint efforts leading to the dismantling of a major drug-trafficking network. The US has further expanded support for Nigerian agricultural exports through its export credit guarantee programme. This commitment underlines Lagos as one of America’s most significant global investment hubs.

Second place is nice, but that ranking ignores the persistent bottlenecks and poor infrastructure that still slow broader trade growth.
