Akpabio Alleges Tinubu’s Foes Sponsor Insecurity to Undermine Democracy
Senate President Godswill Akpabio says rising insecurity in Nigeria is being funded by opponents of President Bola Tinubu. He made the claim at a book presentation in Abuja on June 13. The event honoured former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar on his 84th birthday. Abubakar steered Nigeria’s 1999 transition to democracy and now chairs the National Peace Committee. Akpabio warned that many enemies of progress are sponsoring violence to tarnish Nigeria’s democracy. He expressed confidence that security forces and the current administration will defeat terrorism and poverty. Recent reports highlight the scale of the crisis. Amnesty International recorded over 10,000 fatalities in the first two years of the Tinubu administration. Kidnappings numbered nearly 4,800 between July 2024 and June 2025, with communities paying billions in ransom.
