Onaiyekan Warns Against ‘Win by All Means’ Approach to Elections
Cardinal John Onaiyekan has warned that Nigeria’s democracy could be at risk if elections are not free, fair and credible. Speaking on a television programme, the former Archbishop of Abuja said the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria raised concerns about future elections during a recent meeting with President Bola Tinubu. He alleged that the administration appears determined to retain power “by all means.” Onaiyekan also said people around the president may be presenting an overly positive picture of conditions in the country. His comments come after Tinubu defended his administration’s economic record and maintained that INEC remains neutral.
