Oyo State, FCMB and Mastercard Foundation Empower 1,000 Youth Farmers with ₦1.5bn Loans

Oyo State Government, FCMB and the Mastercard Foundation have disbursed ₦1.5 billion in collateral-free loans to 1,000 young agripreneurs under the Easylift programme. This initiative combines ₦500 million from the state with ₦1 billion from the development partnership. The scheme is part of the Youth Entrepreneurship in Agribusiness Project (YEAP) and the Sustainable Actions for Economic Recovery (SAfER) programme. Each beneficiary received about ₦1.5 million, with the potential to access up to ₦50 million based on business performance. Governor Seyi Makinde said the goal is to create lasting economic structures that link training, enterprise development and finance. Debo Akande noted that over 5,000 young people have been trained so far, while FCMB’s CEO, Yemisi Edun, emphasised agriculture’s role as a growth driver. The partners expect the initiative to boost food production, create jobs and strengthen the state’s economy through youth-led agribusiness.

The joint funding structure stands out, but previous agripreneur schemes often stalled once initial capital was used.

I'm not convinced that free loans alone will spark lasting innovation without solid training and market linkages.

Farmers could form cooperatives to share costs, improve bargaining power, and ensure smoother loan repayment through collective sales.
