Al-Mustapha Says He Has CCTV Footage Challenging Claims on Abacha’s Death

Former Chief Security Officer to Gen. Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha (retd.), has rejected claims made by retired DSS officer Dennis Amachree about the late military ruler’s death. Speaking at the General Hassan Usman Katsina Memorial Conference in Kaduna, Al-Mustapha alleged that Amachree’s account was fabricated. He said CCTV footage in his custody could contradict the claims, but did not reveal what the footage shows or say whether it would be made public. The dispute follows Amachree’s memoir, which reportedly recounts Abacha’s final hours in June 1998. Abacha’s death at the Presidential Villa remains one of Nigeria’s most disputed political episodes, with former officials and other observers offering conflicting versions over the years.
