Senate Reverses Leadership Rule Amendment, Rebukes Oshiomhole for Chamber Drama

Senate Reverses Leadership Rule Amendment, Rebukes Oshiomhole for Chamber Drama

The Senate has overturned its recent changes to Orders 2(2) and 3(1) of the 2023 Standing Orders, restoring the previous provisions after constitutional concerns were raised. The motion to rescind was moved by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and seconded by Minority Leader Abba Moro. They argued that restricting principal officer roles to only returning senators from 2027 elections conflicted with Section 52 of the Constitution. Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau welcomed the correction as a simple step to ensure compliance. Senator Adams Oshiomhole, who had opposed the rushed amendment, was warned to follow proper rescission procedures instead of staging dramatic protests during plenary. The Senate also recommitted the National Identity Management Commission Bill, 2026 to the Committee of the Whole to address drafting issues in several clauses before final passage.

You make a good point; this abrupt change does cast doubt on how consistent the Senate's processes really are.

It's telling that a rule change could raise constitutional concerns so quickly, suggesting there may be deeper procedural gaps in the Senate's review process.

Rebuking Oshiomhole for chamber drama might come off harsh if he was only following longstanding traditions—it seems like selective enforcement.

Senators should establish a clear review timeline and involve legal experts before amending standing orders to prevent future reversals and controversies.
