Can Kaduna’s Security Gains Turn It Into Nigeria’s Leading Agricultural Hub?

Kaduna State is seeking to turn improved rural security into an agricultural revival. Years of banditry left farms abandoned, schools shut and local economies weakened. The government says its security strategy, including community engagement, security support and forest guards, has helped reclaim more than 500,000 hectares of farmland. The state has sharply increased agricultural spending, with major allocations for irrigation, mechanisation, storage, rural roads and value-chain infrastructure. It has also distributed fertiliser and farm equipment to smallholder farmers, while expanding agricultural insurance coverage to reduce the risks posed by floods, droughts and pests. Kaduna’s larger ambition is to move beyond crop production into agro-industrial processing. The proposed agro-industrial processing zone could link farmers, processors, logistics firms and financial institutions, creating jobs across food production, dairy, livestock, storage and packaging. The real test will be whether these investments deliver safer farming communities, higher yields, profitable farmers, working processing facilities and sustainable jobs. If the strategy is sustained with transparency and strong private-sector participation, Kaduna could become one of Nigeria’s leading integrated agricultural hubs.
