UN Rallies Aid After Devastating Twin Quakes in Venezuela

UN Rallies Aid After Devastating Twin Quakes in Venezuela

The UN has expressed solidarity with Venezuela after twin earthquakes struck its northern states late Wednesday. The first tremor measured 7.2 on the Richter scale and hit near San Felipe, home to about 220,000 people. Less than a minute later, a 7.5 magnitude quake—the strongest in over 125 years—rocked the region. At least 164 people have died and 971 were injured. UN teams, including the Humanitarian Country Team and urban search-and-rescue units, are working with the Venezuelan government to reach those trapped and deliver urgent assistance. A coordination hub in Caracas is directing incoming international rescue squads and relief supplies. Humanitarian agencies warn that the disaster could worsen protection risks for displaced communities. They are mobilising aid to restore basic services and support those facing housing, health and water access challenges.

Has anyone heard from relief teams near San Felipe, or know how communities are mobilizing after those quakes?

Yes o, it's amazing how people step up so fast. Fingers crossed relief teams reach San Felipe smoothly.

It's often said large-scale aid arrives promptly, but Venezuela's infrastructure struggles could slow down any UN relief efforts this time.

I hear you, the quake wrecked so much that reaching remote areas might take longer despite quick UN support.

I'm not convinced that international solidarity always leads to effective ground support; local volunteers might actually make a bigger difference here.

Local emergency drills and community shelters need immediate funding and coordination to handle aftershocks and rebuild shattered homes efficiently.
