Russia Says Nuclear Deterrent Is the Only Barrier to Global War

Russia Says Nuclear Deterrent Is the Only Barrier to Global War

Russia’s Kremlin spokesman has warned that nuclear weapons remain the sole guarantee against a worldwide conflict. He spoke amid renewed concern over an emerging multi-country arms race. The New START treaty between Russia and the United States expired in February, lifting limits on their nuclear arsenals. Neither side has yet moved to renew or replace the deal, even after agreeing to restart high-level talks. Russia argues that any new agreement must include not only China but also U.S. allies such as Britain and France to be balanced. The spokesman also cautioned that future non-nuclear weapons could one day match nuclear destructive power. His remarks highlight lingering tensions over global security and the fragility of existing arms control arrangements.
