Wike Tells Yobo: Nigerians Are Disappointed After Super Eagles Miss World Cup

Wike Tells Yobo: Nigerians Are Disappointed After Super Eagles Miss World Cup

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has lambasted the Super Eagles for failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He made the remarks at the inauguration of the Kuje-Gwagwalada Road in Abuja, where former captain Joseph Yobo was among the guests. Wike described watching lesser-known nations in the expanded 48-team tournament as deeply frustrating. “I’ve spent hours following teams I’ve never heard of, yet Nigeria, with over 13 players in top leagues, didn’t make the cut,” he said. He urged Yobo to deliver a clear message to the squad: Nigerians are not happy. Nigeria’s campaign ultimately ended after a penalty-shootout defeat to Congo in the qualifying playoff.

It's strange that a minister focuses more on football failures than pressing infrastructure issues in Abuja right now.

Maybe it's time to invest more in grassroots coaching and youth academies to rebuild the team from the ground up.
