27 Killed in Fresh Attacks on Benue and Plateau Communities
In separate assaults by suspected armed groups, 18 residents were killed across communities in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State. In Plateau State’s Riyom LGA, nine members of a single family–including a two-month-old baby–were shot dead at night. The violence began Friday when herders attacked farms in Akpachi village, killing two farmers. At dawn on Sunday, gunmen struck Otukpo-Nobi, leaving 16 people dead and injuring others. Angered youths disrupted a church service and stormed the Och’Idoma’s palace, blocking roads and demanding action. Governor Hyacinth Alia condemned the attacks as barbaric. He ordered security agencies to intensify patrols, collaborate with neighbours, track down the perpetrators, and ensure prosecutions. Local leaders in Plateau State have also urged stronger protection for vulnerable communities. Authorities are working to locate missing persons, relocate survivors, and provide medical aid. Residents insist that urgent government intervention is needed to halt the recurring violence.
