Beyond State Police: Empowering Governors with State Army, Air Force, and Navy
Nigeria’s security crisis has reignited calls for state police. Governors rightly argue they are responsible for citizens’ welfare yet lack control over federal forces in their states. If we are serious about restructuring security, the debate must go further. States need tailored land, air, and naval units under clear legal frameworks to tackle banditry, terrorism, piracy, kidnapping, and communal violence without waiting on federal approval. A decentralized force allows coastal states to protect waterways, northern regions to fight insurgents, and remote areas to deploy aerial surveillance and rapid response. With strong constitutional safeguards, professional standards, and federal oversight, local threats can be met with local solutions. Updating our security architecture isn’t about breaking the nation but strengthening it. Governors should champion a comprehensive model that empowers states with the authority and accountability needed to safeguard lives and property.
