Seven Years of Xenophobia: 105 Nigerians Killed in South Africa
The Nigerian community in South Africa has challenged claims that migrants face no fatal attacks in the country. Leaders of the Nigerian Union South Africa and the Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa say records show at least 105 Nigerians died in xenophobic violence and alleged extra-judicial killings from 2019 to early 2026. Community reports cite mob violence, vigilante attacks, police brutality, and deaths in custody. They note 12 deaths in 2019 unrest, over 17 in 2022, more than 40 in 2023, eight in both 2024 and 2025, and over 20 from January 2026 to date. The groups urge South African authorities to hold transparent investigations, prosecute offenders, strengthen anti-xenophobia measures, and promote social integration. They stress that both Nigerians and South Africans deserve equal protection under the law.
