Army Commander Reveals Why Drones Failed to Track Kidnappers in Old Oyo Forest

The General Officer Commanding 2 Division, Major General Chinedu Nnebeife, says thick forest canopy in Old Oyo National Park thwarted aerial surveillance during the rescue of 44 abducted pupils and teachers. He explained that both Nigerian Air Force aircraft and drone teams could not penetrate the tree cover, forcing troops to conduct a risky ground assault. The operation claimed the lives of an officer and a soldier and left others wounded. Major General Nnebeife took full command of the month-long operation after the setback. He coordinated additional forces and intelligence assets from across the country until the victims were rescued after 56 days in captivity.
