Power Minister Adelabu Abandons Oyo Governorship Bid After Missing Resignation Deadline

President Tinubu ordered all political appointees with elective ambitions to resign by March 31, 2026. Only Transport Minister Saidu Alkali complied, submitting his letter after meeting the President. The directive, signed by SGF George Akume, implements Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026 and aligns with INEC’s timetable for party primaries. Alkali confirmed his resignation via a statement from his media aide and said he plans to contest the Gombe governorship next year. He thanked the President for the opportunity to serve and noted progress in the transport sector during his tenure. The President accepted his resignation and commended his service to the nation. Meanwhile, Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu has dropped his Oyo State governorship ambition after failing to step down by the deadline. His media aide dismissed a circulated resignation letter as fake. Adelabu remains in office and continues his ministerial duties.

It's interesting that only the Transport Minister complied while others ignored Tinubu's directive to resign before the deadline.

Missing the deadline might say more about the party's internal chaos than any one minister's intentions, not just a simple oversight.

For future aspirants, tracking official deadlines and submitting resignation letters early could prevent similar disqualifications.
