What Nigerians Abroad Truly Miss About Home

Many Nigerians living abroad say Nigeria is the best country in the world. Yet what they often miss is not just the place but the contrast in social dynamics. Back home, titles and status arrive before you do. Sir, Chief, Honorable – your influence is visible in how people wait, bend queues, or open doors. Abroad, a bus ticket is the same for everyone and nobody asks "Do you know who I am?" In more egalitarian societies, success is quieter. The law does not bend, institutions do not flatter, and nobody’s latest phone or car sets them apart. What feels like homesickness can instead be a longing for the oxygen of hierarchy. So when you say you miss Nigeria, remember to miss the laughter, the warmth, the community. But be honest if what you truly miss is the feeling of being larger than life.

What aspects of those respectful greetings or status symbols abroad actually leave you feeling homesick for Nigeria's familiar social warmth?

Absolutely, those stiff bows abroad no reach our warm hugs and cheek pecks when friends meet back home.

It's curious how people abroad praise Nigeria as the best country, yet they often overlook the everyday support networks that felt more genuine back home.

I'm not convinced that titles alone capture the real sense of belonging. Sometimes those formal greetings can feel hollow without genuine relationships.

Try recreating that supportive vibe by organizing local meetups with fellow Nigerians abroad, so you can share the familiar warmth and respect you miss from home.
