Iconic Marilyn Monroe Treasures Auctioned for Her 100th Birthday
Personal items of Marilyn Monroe went under the hammer to mark her 100th birth anniversary. Julien’s Auctions presented 185 artifacts including gowns, handbags and unseen photographs. A 1950s evening purse containing Monroe’s comb, lipstick, cigarettes and coins drew a top bid of $70,000. Other highlights included a brassiere from the 1950s, once owned by her acting coach, which fetched $7,000 against a $1,000 estimate. Fans also competed for her personal make-up products and signed, never-before-published photos by Allan Grant and Milton Greene. The olive-green gates from her Brentwood home, originally bought in 1962 for about $100, reached bids of $15,000. Across the US, celebrations honoured Monroe’s legacy. In Palm Springs, over a thousand admirers dressed in her famous white pleated dress and gathered around her statue. The auction coincides with nationwide events commemorating Monroe, born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926.
