Why Reintroducing Fuel Subsidy Would Fuel Nigeria’s Debt Crisis
I’m not aligned with any party. I supported fuel subsidies until 2012, but I changed my mind. The government hasn’t budgeted for subsidies this year. Restoring them would divert funds, deplete reserves, and force fresh borrowing. That means more debt. High oil prices don’t solve the problem. We still owe past debts, which cut into any windfall. Subsidies fuel smuggling and inflate costs. Selling crude at a discount to Dangote would also reduce revenue and clash with OPEC rules—all leading to more borrowing. That’s my 20 naira. For 2027, I’ll vote Peter Obi—not because he’s perfect, but to signal that we demand accountability. If he disappoints, we vote him out.
