Meet Daniel Zhang: Alibaba’s Visionary CEO, Net Worth & Career Journey

Daniel Zhang (Zhang Yong) is a Chinese technology executive who leads Alibaba Group as CEO. He previously served as CFO and then CEO of Taobao before becoming president of Alibaba’s Tmall platform. Zhang created the Singles’ Day shopping festival, which now outperforms Cyber Monday and Black Friday combined. Born in Shanghai on January 11, 1972, Zhang graduated in finance from the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. He began his career at Barings Bank and then worked at Arthur Andersen and Price Waterhouse Coopers. In 2007 he joined Taobao as CFO and rose quickly through Alibaba’s ranks. Daniel Zhang is married to Shu Ping. The couple keeps their personal life private. At Alibaba, Zhang chose the nickname “Free and Unfettered Person.” He regularly appears at the World Economic Forum in Davos and other global events. As of 2026, Zhang’s net worth is estimated at around $1 billion. His strong financial background and strategic vision continue to shape Alibaba’s growth.
