Lagos Backs Over 200 Events to Solidify Africa’s Tourism Crown
Lagos State has supported more than 200 cultural, entertainment and tourism events in the past year under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration. Commissioner Toke Benson-Awoyinka revealed that sponsorship rose from 143 events last year to 201 this year. The projects span fashion, music, theatre, food tourism, art exhibitions, film, comedy and international festivals. Major highlights include Lagos Fashion Week, Headies Awards, AFRIMA, the revived Eyo Festival and Africa’s first all-electric powerboat race at E1 Lagos. Heritage sites also saw a surge in visitors. The J. Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture welcomed over 56,000 guests and won a global theatre award, Freedom Park attracted nearly 28,000 visitors and the Badagry Heritage Museum drew more than 10,000 tourists. Lagos issued over 2,000 filming permits and ran training programmes that reached over 10,000 young creatives. Plans are now underway to harmonise hotel licensing and tourism fees to cut red tape and boost investor confidence. These reforms aim to strengthen Lagos’s position as Africa’s premier destination for tourism, hospitality, arts and culture.
