Trump Praises Tinubu’s Leadership in Fight Against Terrorism and Christian Persecution
In a July 6 letter to President Bola Tinubu, US President Donald Trump commended Tinubu’s resolve to tackle Nigeria’s security challenges. He highlighted the violence faced by Christian communities and described it as an honour to stand with Nigeria against terrorism. Trump noted that ties between the two countries have strengthened under the US–Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap. He emphasised the deployment of US Special Operations Forces to train Nigerian troops with advanced skills, intelligence and operational support. He also pointed to successes like the coordinated May 16 operation against ISIS in the Lake Chad region, which eliminated key commanders. Trump expressed optimism about sustaining close cooperation and looked forward to further engagements following a recent visit by the US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs.
